It's a snake!
Originally uploaded by khyri
This fine creature slithered into view as I was relaxing in my hammock this morning. Needless to say, I felt much less relaxed after I spotted him.

I requested identification help from work, and got this response back from Jan in HIIZ: "The snake in the photos looks to be a coachwhip. They are so hightly variable. Some are all black, some all pink and then lots that have blotchy pink and black"

While in your hammock, you were pretty safe. Still, I can understand the feeling.

I dunno. Last time I saw a coachwhip was during lunch at work - we were sitting on the outside patio when we heard the cactus wrens suddenly start shrieking. I looked up, and saw this black rope snaking its way along the branch of a mesquite, heading for a bird's nest. I wouldn't put it behind credibility for one to climb up the hammock frame it if thought there were baby birds on my stomach! ;)

Or maybe not.
